RTL Nieuws 26-12-2015 10:01 The number of fatal accidents involving large passenger aircraft has been declining for years. Nevertheless, there were considerably more fatalities in 2014 than in the years before, according to figures from the Aviation Safety Network.
Since the all-time high in 1972, when 2,373 people died, the number of fatalities from air accidents has declined. In 1985 (2010 deaths) and 1996 (1845 deaths) you see peaks in the line, just like in 2014. The number of fatal accidents was never as low as last year. Yet there is a peak because there were some accidents that claimed many lives. It concerns the disappearance of flight MH370 (239 deaths), the accident in Mali of the Air Algérie plane and the AirAsia aircraft that crashed in the Java Sea. The disaster with flight MH17 is not included in these figures, because it concerns an attack.
